Group Therapy (Virtual – Alberta & Across Canada)

A counsellor listening to a client
Group therapy offers a different kind of support than individual work. It allows people to learn not only through personal reflection, but through shared experience. Many people find that being witnessed by others, and hearing themselves in others’ stories, brings clarity and steadiness that is difficult to access alone. My groups are designed to feel contained, intentional, and safe. They are not open or drop-in spaces. They are structured environments where learning, reflection, and relational awareness happen together.

How My Groups Are Structured

• Groups are closed once they begin
• Groups include 4–7 participants
• Each group is built around one central theme
• Members commit to the full cycle of the group

This structure is what supports safety, consistency, and meaningful connection.

Types of Groups Offered
I offer two general formats of group work:

1. Longer-term groups
These are contractual or community-based groups that run for an extended period of time (for example, October through March). They provide continuity and depth around a shared focus.

2. Shorter themed cycles
These are focused groups that typically run for 4–6 weeks. Each cycle explores a specific theme in a contained and intentional way.

Some groups are open only to existing clients. Others are open to new participants following an intake and screening process.

What Happens in Group
Group work is a blend of shared experience and skill-building.

Depending on the group and its theme, the work may include:
• guided discussion and reflection
• psychoeducation related to the group’s focus
• practical skills for boundaries, communication, and emotional awareness
• learning through listening to others
• noticing patterns in how we relate, speak, and respond

Groups are not about performance or exposure. They are about learning in a steady, respectful environment where people can observe themselves and others with curiosity.

Safety and Containment
Safety is central to group work. Not only physical safety, but emotional, psychological, and relational safety.

Structure, size, and clarity of expectations are what make group therapy supportive rather than overwhelming. Closed membership, consistent facilitation, and clear boundaries protect both the individual and the group as a whole.

How to Join
Participation begins by submitting an Expression of Interest.

This allows us to determine whether the group is a good fit, clarify expectations, and consider readiness and safety.

Submitting an Expression of Interest does not guarantee placement. It begins a conversation about whether a particular group is appropriate at this time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a supportive form of counseling where a small group of participants meet with a therapist to explore shared challenges, gain insight, and build a sense of community.

How many people are usually in a group?

Groups are typically kept between 6 and 10 participants. This size helps ensure that everyone feels heard while still benefiting from a range of perspectives and experiences.

What issues are addressed in group therapy?

Common themes include anxiety, stress, recovery, grief, parenting challenges, and relationship concerns. Each group focuses on topics that meet the needs of its members.

Is group therapy confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is essential. All group members agree to keep what is shared private, and the therapist ensures the space remains safe and respectful.

How does group therapy differ from individual therapy?

While individual therapy focuses deeply on your personal story, group therapy allows you to learn from others, practice new skills in real time, and feel supported by peers who understand your struggles.

Do I need to share in group therapy?

You are encouraged to participate at your own pace. Many people start by listening and gradually feel comfortable sharing as trust develops within the group.
